Сьогодні театр відомий не лише своїм різножанровим репертуаром, а й незвичайним фасадом у вигляді гігантської дерев’яної шафи. Цей архітектурний задум, натхненний «Хроніками Нарнії» Клайва Льюїса, став справжнім символом театру — магічною брамою у світ казок та фантазії. За вісім десятиліть театр зібрав унікальну колекцію сценічних ляльок — від класичних маріонеток і тростинних фігур до рукавичкових ляльок і традиційних петрушок. У його афіші — десятки вистав, що здобули статус культових. Зокрема, постановка «Історія Дюймовочки» не сходить зі сцени з 1994 року, налічує понад 600 показів і залишається однією з найулюбленіших серед юної публіки, «ЦелестинА» за твором Фернандо де Рохаса, «Козлик Матолека», а також «Пригоди Синдбада-Мореплавця» — фантастичну подорож, що перетворює сцену на портал у східні казки. Протягом 80 років Baj Pomorski не лише зберігає лялькові традиції, а й сміливо експериментує з формами, впроваджуючи мультимедійні технології та сучасну сценографію.
Baj Pomorski: Celebrating the Legacy of One of Poland’s Oldest Puppet Theatres
In April 2025, Baj Pomorski Puppet Theatre in Toruń will mark its 80th anniversary — a milestone in the history of one of Poland’s most renowned and longstanding puppet theatres. Founded in 1945, the theatre took its first steps in the city of Bydgoszcz, becoming the first puppet theatre in the Pomerania region. It was initially housed in a former municipal slaughterhouse, a building that had previously served as a German marionette theatre during the Nazi occupation. Its debut performance — The Little Wandering Tailor, based on a story by acclaimed children’s author Ewa Szelburg-Zarembina — held special symbolic significance in the postwar context. By 1946, Baj Pomorski had moved to its permanent home in Toruń, settling into a venue on 9 Piernikarska Street. Today, the theatre is known not only for its diverse repertoire but also for its striking architectural design — a giant wooden wardrobe, inspired by The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis. This imaginative façade has become a beloved symbol of the theatre — a magical gateway into a world of fairy tales and fantasy. Over eight decades, Baj Pomorski has built a remarkable collection of theatrical puppets, ranging from classical marionettes and rod puppets to glove puppets and traditional Polish petrushkas. Its repertoire includes dozens of productions that have achieved cult status. Among the most iconic is The Story of Thumbelina, which has been performed over 600 times since its 1994 premiere and remains a favourite with young audiences. Other celebrated productions include Celestina, adapted from the work of Fernando de Rojas, the beloved Polish tale Koziołek Matołek (The Billy-Goat Fool), and The Adventures of Sinbad the Sailor — a spectacular journey that transforms the stage into a gateway to Eastern folklore. For 80 years, Baj Pomorski has not only preserved the traditions of puppetry but has also embraced innovation, incorporating multimedia technologies and contemporary stage design to keep the art form fresh and relevant.
