Втрата цієї сертифікації означає, що чинні іноземні студенти повинні перевестись в інші університети, інакше втратять право перебувати в США. У листі міністерства йдеться, що причиною такого рішення є невиконання Гарвардом вимог щодо подання звітності у межах федерального розслідування щодо дотримання міграційного законодавства. Водночас, Гарвард звинуватили у сприянні антиамериканським настроям, поширенні антисемітизму, підтримці насильства, а також співпраці з Комуністичною партією Китаю. Це рішення — частина ширшого наступу на провідні американські університети, який адміністрація Трампа виправдовує боротьбою з радикалізацією кампусів. Водночас Гарвард офіційно заперечив усі обвинувачення й назвав дії федеральної влади неправомірними та політично мотивованими та готує судовий позов. Наразі в університеті навчається понад 6 800 іноземних студентів, що становить приблизно 27% усіх здобувачів освіти. За оцінками викладачів такі обмеження можуть серйозно підірвати міжнародний імідж США як освітнього центру.
Trump Administration Bans Harvard from Enrolling International Students
The Trump administration has revoked Harvard University's certification to participate in the federal program for hosting international students. The decision was announced by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. As a result, Harvard is no longer authorized to admit students under F-1 and J-1 visas for the 2025–2026 academic year. These are the primary student visas for foreigners studying full-time at accredited U.S. institutions or participating in academic and research exchange programs. The loss of this certification also means that current international students must transfer to other institutions or risk losing their legal status in the U.S. According to a letter from the Department of Homeland Security, the decision stems from Harvard's failure to comply with basic reporting requirements as part of a federal investigation into immigration law compliance. Additionally, the university has been accused of fostering anti-American sentiment, spreading antisemitism, supporting violence, and collaborating with the Chinese Communist Party. The move is part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration against elite academic institutions, justified by officials as an effort to combat campus radicalization. Harvard, in response, has rejected all allegations, calling the government's actions unlawful and politically motivated, and is preparing to take legal action. Currently, Harvard hosts over 6,800 international students, representing approximately 27% of its student body. Faculty members warn that such restrictions could seriously damage the United States’ global reputation as a center for higher education.
