Український полярник Павло Коваленко отримав стипендію Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) за підтримки Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. У 2025 році він увійшов до шістки молодих науковців, чиї дослідження визнано пріоритетними для антарктичної науки. Дослідник НАНЦ та аспірант Інституту еволюційної екології НАН України вивчає вплив зміни клімату на єдину наземну комаху-ендеміка Антарктики — Belgica antarctica. Вид витримує морози до –15°C, але різко реагує на потепління: кілька днів при +10°C можуть знищити популяцію, що робить його індикатором кліматичних зрушень. Матеріал зібрано під час експедицій на станцію «Академік Вернадський» у 2021–2022 та 2023–2024 роках. Подальший аналіз ДНК і генетичної мінливості відбуватиметься в Oakland University (США) з порівнянням із даними досліджень біля станції «Палмер», проведених понад десять років тому. Раніше стипендії SCAR здобували українські дослідниці Марія Павловська (2019), Євгенія Прекрасна (2021) та Ганна Євчун (2022).
Ukrainian Scientist Awarded Fellowship for Studying the Midge That Measures Global Warming
Ukrainian polar researcher Pavlo Kovalenko has been awarded a fellowship by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) with support from the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation. In 2025, he was named one of six early-career scientists whose projects have been recognised as priorities for Antarctic research. A researcher at the National Antarctic Scientific Center of Ukraine and a PhD candidate at the Institute of Evolutionary Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kovalenko studies the impact of climate change on Antarctica’s only endemic terrestrial insect, Belgica antarctica. The species can survive temperatures as low as –15°C, yet is highly sensitive to warming: just a few days at +10°C may wipe out an entire population, making it a clear indicator of climate shifts. Samples were collected during expeditions to the Akademik Vernadsky station in 2021–2022 and 2023–2024. Further DNA and genetic variability analysis will be conducted at Oakland University (USA), with comparisons to data gathered more than a decade ago near the Palmer Station. Previous Ukrainian recipients of SCAR fellowships include Mariia Pavlovska (2019), Yevheniia Prekrasna (2021), and Hanna Yevchun (2022).
