30 травня 2025 року у культурному житті Карпатського регіону відбулася подія, що може докорінно змінити уявлення про середньовічну спадщину: відомий діяч угорської культури Закарпаття Орш Орос виявив раніше невідомий рукопис — середньовічний кодекс, датований кінцем XIV – початком XV століття. За попередніми оцінками фахівців з Національної бібліотеки ім. Сечені, цей артефакт зберігся у винятково доброму стані, що саме по собі є рідкістю для подібних документів. Новий кодекс є шостим доповненням до вже відомої серії так званих «кодуксів зі Сепешоласі», раніше налічувала лише п’ять екземплярів. Відкриття не лише наукова сенсація, а й історична подія, адже останні значні знахідки середньовічних рукописів датуються XVIII століттям. Як зазначив сам дослідник, ця подія — абсолютно безпрецедентна. Імовірно, кодекс походить із церковної або шляхетської бібліотеки, є унікальним свідченням письмової культури до початку друкарства. Особистий шлях відкривача додає історії особливого колориту — Орш Орос мріяв про таку знахідку ще з юності, а у 40-річчя вона стала йому найкращим подарунком. Наразі кодекс проходить реставрацію, а вже цієї осені на офіційному відкритті Палацу паллотинів у Гуменному цей безцінний документ буде доступний для широкої публіки.
A Unique 15th-Century Codex from Transcarpathia to Be Unveiled for the First Time
On May 30, 2025, the cultural landscape of the Carpathian region was transformed by a remarkable discovery that could redefine our understanding of medieval heritage. Ors Oros, a prominent Hungarian cultural figure from Transcarpathia, uncovered a previously unknown medieval manuscript — a codex believed to date back to the late 14th or early 15th century. According to preliminary assessments by experts at the National Széchényi Library, the manuscript has survived in exceptional condition — a rarity among documents of such age and provenance. This newly discovered volume is thought to be the sixth installment in the known collection of the so-called “Szepesolaszi Codices,” previously comprising only five manuscripts. More than a scholarly sensation, this find is being hailed as a cultural milestone. Major discoveries of genuine medieval codices have become exceedingly rare since the 18th century. As Oros himself noted, “What happened here is truly without precedent.” The manuscript is thought to have originated from either a noble or ecclesiastical library, offering a unique glimpse into pre-print written culture in Central Europe. Adding a personal layer to the discovery, Oros revealed that he had dreamt of finding such a treasure since his youth. Now, as he approaches his 40th birthday, that dream has become reality — and the codex, the most meaningful of gifts. The manuscript is currently undergoing expert restoration. It is set to be presented to the public this autumn during the official reopening of the Pallottine Palace in Humenné, where it will be displayed alongside architecture from the same medieval period.
