New Baltic Dance знову підтвердив статус головної платформи contemporary dance у країнах Балтії. Фестиваль, що відбувся у Вільнюсі, об’єднав литовських та європейських хореографів, експериментальні постановки, мультимедійні перформанси та найгучніші танцювальні прем’єри сезону. Найбільший резонанс у литовських медіа та соцмережах викликала постановка «Казка королів» режисерки та хореографки Анжеліка Холіна. Видання 15min і Made in Vilnius назвали виставу однією з найважливіших культурних подій року: квитки на низку показів були розкуплені ще до прем’єри. Постановку створено до 150-річчя литовського художника й композитора Мікалоюс Константінас Чюрльоніс. В основі вистави — музика самого Чюрльоніса та сучасних литовських композиторів, зокрема Міндаугаса Урбайтіса, Донатаса Закараса та Йоре Барташкайте.
«Казка королів» — епічна й поетична танцювальна вистава, що розповідає про внутрішній світ Чюрльоніса, його творчість, кохання та драматичну долю. Головними персонажами стали сам митець у різні періоди життя, його дружина Софія Кимантайте-Чюрльонене, перше кохання Марія Моравська та меценатка Броніслава Вольман. Окремим сценічним образом у виставі стала сама «творчість» Чюрльоніса — її уособлюють 25 молодих танцівниць театру ACH. «Для мене було важливо максимально точно відтворити психологічний портрет Чюрльоніса — його стосунок до творчості, жінок, самотності й трагічного раннього відходу», — пояснює Анжеліка Холіна в інтерв’ю литовським медіа. Художній стиль вистави поєднує сучасну хореографію, класичний балет, відеопроєкції та масштабні масові сцени. Сценографію створив Марюс Яцовскіс, костюми — Ольга Філатова Контрімєне. Критики особливо відзначали візуальну естетику вистави та її «живописну» сценічну мову, натхненну роботами самого Чюрльоніса. Литовський культурний портал 15min писав, що «Казка королів» стала «одним із найяскравіших мистецьких акцентів року Чюрльоніса» у Литві. Музикознавець Вітаутас Ландсбергіс після перегляду вистави назвав її «чимось настільки прекрасним, що слово “прекрасно” вже замале». Європейські оглядачі називали постановку прикладом того, як балтійський театр поєднує національну культурну пам’ять із сучасною сценічною мовою.
Vilnius Emerges as the Baltic Capital of Contemporary Dance with Anželika Cholina’s The Tale of the Kings
The New Baltic Dance festival once again confirmed its status as the leading platform for contemporary dance in the Baltic states. Held in Vilnius, the festival brought together Lithuanian and European choreographers, experimental productions, multimedia performances and some of the season’s most anticipated dance premieres. The production that generated the greatest response in Lithuanian media and across social networks was The Tale of the Kings by director and choreographer Anželika Cholina. Lithuanian outlets 15min and Made in Vilnius described the work as one of the country’s most significant cultural events of the year, with several performances selling out before opening night.
Created to mark the 150th anniversary of Lithuanian painter and composer Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the production is built around Čiurlionis’ music alongside compositions by contemporary Lithuanian composers including Mindaugas Urbaitis, Donatas Zakaras and Jorė Barštakaitė.The Tale of the Kings is an epic and deeply poetic dance production exploring Čiurlionis’ inner world, artistic vision, love affairs and tragic судьба. The performance presents the artist at different stages of his life, alongside the key women who shaped his story: his wife Sofija Kymantaitė-Čiurlionienė, his first love Marija Moravska and patron Bronislava Wolman. Creativity itself becomes a separate stage character, embodied by 25 young dancers from the ACH Theatre troupe.
“For me, it was essential to recreate Čiurlionis’ psychological portrait as accurately as possible — his relationship with creativity, women, loneliness and his tragically early departure,” Cholina said in an interview with Lithuanian media.Visually, the production blends contemporary choreography with classical ballet, video projections and large-scale ensemble scenes. The scenography was created by Marijus Jacovskis, while costumes were designed by Olga Filatova Kontrimienė. Critics particularly praised the production’s painterly visual language, inspired by Čiurlionis’ own artworks.Lithuanian cultural platform 15min described The Tale of the Kings as “one of the brightest artistic highlights of the Čiurlionis anniversary year” in Lithuania.Musicologist Vytautas Landsbergis called the production “something so beautiful that the word ‘beautiful’ itself feels insufficient”.European critics have also pointed to the performance as an example of how Baltic theatre successfully merges national cultural memory with a contemporary stage language.
