У березні 2026 року на Мальті розпочалася друга edycія Malta Biennale, яка триватиме до травня. Цьогорічна бієнале проходить під назвою CLEAN | CLEAR | CUT під художнім керівництвом відомої іспанської кураторки Rosa Martínez. Концептуальні рамки події були представлені 26 березня 2025 року у Національному музеї археології у Валлетті, символічно запустивши зворотний відлік до однієї з найважливіших культурних подій на міжнародній сцені. Перша edycія Malta Biennale у 2024 році вже закріпила Мальту на глобальній карті сучасного мистецтва. Тема CLEAN | CLEAR | CUT походить від мальтійської геології: вапняк, з якого будували міста, проходить процес обробки — очистити, прояснити, відсікти. Мальта через бієнале демонструє свою географічну та історичну унікальність, поєднує археологічну спадщину та сучасне мистецтво, а її історичні міста — Валлетта, Біргу та Цитадель на Гозо — стають живими галереями, що формують нові культурні сенси.
Malta Biennale 2026: Carving the Future from Stone and Memory
In March 2026, the second edition of the Malta Biennale began and will run until May. This year, the biennale takes place under the title CLEAN | CLEAR | CUT, under the artistic direction of the renowned Spanish curator Rosa Martínez. The conceptual framework of the event was presented on March 26, 2025, at the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta, symbolically marking the countdown to one of the most important cultural events on the international stage. The first edition of the Malta Biennale in 2024 already placed Malta on the global map of contemporary art. The event received support from the President of Malta and UNESCO, highlighting its institutional significance and international impact, and was highly praised by critics. Malta has historically been a crossroads of Mediterranean civilizations, and the curators of the biennale emphasize that art on the islands acts as a kind of seismograph of global change. The event creates a platform for dialogue between cultures and for reinterpreting historical processes, transforming Malta into a center of contemporary cultural discourse.The biennale takes place across 90 museums and heritage sites, including megalithic temples, fortresses, palaces, and national museums. These historic locations cease to be mere guardians of the past and become living stages of the present, where heritage interacts with contemporary art. As noted by Mario Cutajar, President of Heritage Malta, contemporary art allows these spaces to “cease being merely buildings that speak of the past.” The theme CLEAN | CLEAR | CUT originates from Malta’s geology: limestone, from which the cities were built, undergoes a process of refinement — to cleanse, clarify, and cut. This serves as a metaphor for cultural and social reinterpretation: art “carves” new paths, removes excess, and opens space for new ideas and meanings. Visitors experience more than an exhibition; they engage in an interactive experience where artworks inhabit the spaces, interact with the memory of the place, and create a dialogue between history and the pressing issues of the present. For the 2026 biennale, 3,200 proposals from 122 countries were submitted, with 47 main projects selected. Through the biennale, Malta demonstrates its geographical and historical uniqueness, combining archaeological heritage with contemporary art, while its historic cities — Valletta, Birgu, and the Citadel of Gozo — become living galleries that generate new cultural meanings.
