A Major Retrospective of New Zealand Artist Robin White Opens at Te Papa
The National Museum of New Zealand, Te Papa Tongarewa, has opened a large retrospective exhibition, Te Whanaketanga | Something is Happening Here, dedicated to contemporary New Zealand artist Robin White — one of Aotearoa’s most influential figures, with a creative career spanning more than fifty years. After its showing at Te Papa in Wellington, the exhibition will travel to Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki. The exhibition brings together more than 70 works, including paintings, prints, and major collaborative projects created by the artist in partnership with fellow creatives from New Zealand and across the Pacific. Visitors will see both her iconic portraits and landscapes from the 1970s as well as her recent works exploring the culture and everyday life of communities in Aotearoa and the wider Pacific region. The project is the result of years of research by art historian Jill Trevelyan and aims to deepen understanding of Robin White’s contribution to shaping New Zealand’s national identity. According to White, the retrospective feels like “a family reunion,” as works have returned from private collections and galleries across the country: “Each work carries its own story — of the people it lived with. That brings a richness far beyond me.” The exhibition is accompanied by a substantial publication, Robin White: Something is Happening Here, featuring contributions from 24 writers from New Zealand, Australia, and Pacific nations. Robin White (born 1946, Te Puke) is a New Zealand artist of Māori (Ngāti Awa) and European descent and one of the leading figures of Aotearoa’s art scene. Her practice spans painting, printmaking, and distinctive collaborative projects with artists from Polynesia and Melanesia. Today she is regarded as an artist whose work shapes the visual language of contemporary New Zealand and strengthens intercultural dialogue throughout the Pacific region.
