До списку також увійшли книги про Александра Македонського, Барбару Картленд, Париж напередодні війни та революційні конфлікти останніх десятиліть.
Важливість премії виходить далеко за межі літературного рейтингу. Її заснували 1999 року як Samuel Johnson Prize, а з 2016-го вона носить нинішню назву. Baillie Gifford Prize 2026: Longlist Announced for Britain’s Leading Non-Fiction Prize
The longlist for the 2026 Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction, one of the world’s most prestigious awards for literary non-fiction, has been announced. Thirteen books have been selected from more than 350 eligible titles. The prize has no restrictions on subject matter or the nationality of its authors: this year’s nominees include biographies, historical studies and reportage, alongside books exploring war, espionage, politics and culture. The winner will receive £50,000, while the six-book shortlist will be announced on 1 October.
Particular attention has focused on Ukrainian Lessons: Art in a Time of War by British journalist Charlotte Higgins. The author has worked directly in Ukraine, exploring the country’s cultural life during the war — from poetry and theatre to ballet and visual art that continues to exist despite the shelling. The judges described the book as a brave and deeply moving work of reportage, emphasising that culture has become one of the central battlegrounds of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
Other nominees include Nicholas Boggs, with his biography of James Baldwin; Ian Buruma, whose book examines Berlin between 1939 and 1945; Ben Macintyre, writing about one of the Cold War’s most celebrated spies; Bojan Pancevski, with an investigation into the Nord Stream explosions; and Åsne Seierstad, with a report on life in contemporary Russia. The longlist also features books about Alexander the Great, Barbara Cartland, Paris on the eve of war and revolutionary conflicts of recent decades.
The importance of the prize extends well beyond a literary ranking. It was established in 1999 as the Samuel Johnson Prize and adopted its current name in 2016. According to Peter Bazalgette, chair of the judging panel and a prominent cultural commentator, the prize has a vital role in an age of overwhelming numbers of new books: separating genuinely important works from the noise and helping readers discover the best non-fiction. Significantly, winning books typically see a sharp rise in sales afterwards.
The 2025 Baillie Gifford Prize was awarded to Australian writer Helen Garner for How to End a Story: Collected Diaries. It was the first time in the prize’s history that a collection of diaries had won. The Guardian has described the Baillie Gifford Prize as one of Britain’s most prestigious awards for non-fiction, while critics have compared Garner’s diaries with the finest literary journals of Virginia Woolf.
The 2026 winner will be announced in London on 4 November. Before then, the publishing world will be watching for the six finalists, whose selection will be announced on 1 October.
