На 78-му Каннському кінофестивалі відбулася подія, що викликала потужний суспільний резонанс — на червоній доріжці разом із Боно та Шоном Пенном з’явилися українські військові. У межах прем’єри документального фільму "Stories of Surrender", присвяченого життю та творчості фронтмена гурту U2, митці використали світову кіноплатформу для звернення уваги на війну в Україні. Поряд із Боно на прем’єрі були його дружина Алі Х’юсон, гітарист The Edge, а також американський актор, режисер і активіст Шон Пенн. Особливим моментом вечора стала поява семи українських військовослужбовців у формі, які піднялися сходами Палацу фестивалів разом з артистами. Цей вчинок одразу ж став знаковим символом підтримки України та згадав про жорстоку та загарбницьку війну з Росією. Поява військових викликала тривалі оплески на червоній доріжці та в залі головного кінотеатру. Користувачі Twitter і Instagram називають цей момент «найпотужнішим кадром Канн 2025» і «нагадуванням про те, що мистецтво не може бути осторонь війни». Організатори фестивалю у своїй заяві підкреслили, що цьогорічна програма включає одразу кілька стрічок про війну в Україні, наголошуючи на зобов’язанні Каннського кінофестивалю «розповідати про ключові виклики сучасності через силу кіномистецтва». Боно ще в травні 2022 року він разом із The Edge виступив з імпровізованим концертом у київському метро. Того ж року гурт випустив спеціальну версію пісні Walk On, присвячену українцям.

At the 78th Cannes Film Festival, a powerful and symbolic moment unfolded — Ukrainian soldiers appeared on the red carpet alongside Bono and Sean Penn. The occasion marked the premiere of the documentary Stories of Surrender, dedicated to the life and work of the U2 frontman. The artists used this global cinematic platform to draw attention to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Joining Bono at the premiere were his wife Ali Hewson, U2 guitarist The Edge, and American actor, director, and activist Sean Penn. The most poignant moment of the evening was the appearance of seven uniformed Ukrainian servicemen who ascended the steps of the Palais des Festivals together with the artists. This act quickly became a powerful symbol of solidarity with Ukraine and a reminder of the brutal and unprovoked war waged by Russia. The soldiers’ appearance drew prolonged applause both on the red carpet and inside the festival’s main theater. On social media, users on Twitter and Instagram called it “the most powerful image of Cannes 2025” and “a reminder that art cannot remain silent in times of war.” Festival organizers, in an official statement, emphasized that this year’s program includes several films focused on the war in Ukraine, reaffirming the Cannes Film Festival’s commitment to “telling the crucial stories of our time through the power of cinema.” Bono has shown continued support for Ukraine. Back in May 2022, he and The Edge performed an impromptu concert in a Kyiv metro station. Later that year, U2 released a special version of their song Walk On, dedicated to the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people.
