In Paris, a carpenter who helped restore Notre-Dame got married inside the revived cathedral

Inside the restored Notre-Dame de Paris, an event took place that touched both the French and the visitors of the capital: Martin Lorentz, a carpenter who had helped rebuild the cathedral after the 2019 fire, married his fiancée Jade right in the midst of the crowd of tourists. The ceremony was led by Monsignor Ribadeau de Cabar, rector of the cathedral, who warmly addressed the groom:
“Martin, you know this cathedral well… even from above.” Lorentz, who spent three years working on the massive reconstruction project, had personally asked the Archbishop of Paris for permission to hold his wedding in the cathedral — an exceptional request, as Notre-Dame no longer hosts private ceremonies. As the newlyweds stepped outside, they were greeted with applause from visitors gathered on the Île de la Cité. The groom shared his feelings: “I want to share our love with the whole world. This is the happiest day of my life.” This wedding now joins the long line of historic ceremonies held within Notre-Dame. It was here that Mary Stuart wed the future King of France, Francis II, in 1558; Margaret of Valois married Henry of Navarre, later Henry IV; and Napoleon III married Empress Eugénie in 1853. More than a century and a half later, Notre-Dame once again became the witness of a new beginning — this time not for royalty, but for a craftsman who helped restore the cathedral’s lost grandeur with his own hands.
