Американська художниця Емі Шеральд (1973), авторка знакового портрета Мішель Обами, оголосила про скасування фінального етапу своєї виставки American Sublime у Національній портретній галереї у Вашингтоні. Artist Amy Sherald Takes a Stand Against Censorship and Cancels Her Washington Exhibition
American artist Amy Sherald (b. 1973), known for her iconic portrait of Michelle Obama, has announced the cancellation of the final leg of her American Sublime exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The decision came in response to the institution’s request to remove her painting Trans Forming Liberty from the show. The work portrays a non-binary transfeminine figure depicted as the Statue of Liberty. “This portrait was created to give space to someone whose dignity has been challenged and devalued. I cannot consent to any form of censorship—especially when it seeks to silence marginalized communities,” Sherald explained. The controversial piece is part of a broader series in which Sherald explores themes of family, freedom, national identity, and social justice. Her subjects—African Americans—are portrayed with dignity, inner strength, and profound humanity. In the wake of the cancellation, numerous curators, art critics, and cultural institutions voiced their support for Sherald. Rujeko Hockley, curator at the Whitney Museum, commented: “Amy Sherald’s portraits offer deeply insightful depictions of individual identity and remind us of our shared humanity. Her actions reflect a principled stance—one that is urgently needed today.” The National Portrait Gallery, where the exhibition was to take place, is part of the Smithsonian Institution, which has recently come under increasing political pressure. Following his return to office, President Donald Trump accused the Smithsonian of promoting “undesirable ideology,” ordered the dismissal of gallery director Kim Sajet, and signed an executive order giving Vice President J.D. Vance control over exhibition content. Amid these developments, the institution proposed replacing Trans Forming Liberty with a video installation documenting viewer reactions. Sherald rejected the proposal, calling it unacceptable. In her view, such a substitution would “call into question the very value of trans visibility.” Visitors to the Whitney Museum have described the painting as powerful, timely, and emotionally resonant. Many have expressed that it represents not only a work of art but also a symbol of hope and recognition.
