A British Artist Invites Denmark to Write a Letter: An Art Project Marking the End of the Postal Era
British artist Gillian Taylor has addressed the people of Denmark with an unusual invitation — to send her a letter and become part of an art project dedicated to the end of the traditional postal era. The initiative coincides with the moment when PostNord ended letter delivery at the end of 2025. The project, titled “Med Venlig Hilsen” (“Kind regards”), is conceived as an artistic response to the disappearance of paper correspondence from everyday life. During the final hundred days of postal letter services, the artist invites Danes to write to her in Danish or English. The format is open: it may be a long letter, a short greeting, a postcard, or even an addressed envelope without a message. In her practice, Gillian Taylor has long explored the theme of human communication. She has previously created paper installations using love letters from the Second World War, transforming the private words of ordinary people into large-scale artistic statements. According to the artist, handwritten letters carry an emotional depth that is increasingly absent in the digital age. Taylor’s personal connection to Denmark is not accidental. Nearly thirty years ago, she worked in the country for six months and has since maintained a strong cultural and linguistic bond with it. This is why she chose to address Danish society at a moment she considers both symbolic and historic.The collected letters and envelopes will form the material for a new artwork, which the artist plans to present to the public. The premiere of the final piece is scheduled for May at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery in the United Kingdom. The project has already sparked notable public interest: many viewers responded to a feature about it on the BBC Spotlight programme. The story of the Danish letters has prompted reflection not only on the future of postal services, but also on how the very culture of human communication is changing.
